Few actresses have appeared in as many international classics as Irene Papas (real name Irene Lelekou), a gorgeous Greek beauty born in the city of Corinth. Among her classic movie roles are Maria Pappadimos in TheGuns of Navarone (1961), the Widow in Zorba the Greek (1964) and Queen Catherine of Aragon in Anne ofthe Thousand Days (1969). The dark-haired dish has also appeared as Hind in The Message (1976), with Audrey Hepburn in Bloodline (1979) as Simonetta Palazzi, alongside Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer in IntoThe Night (1985) as Shaheen Parvici, as Mrs. Araya in Sweet Country (1987), Irene in Party (1996), and with John Malkovich in A Talking Picture (2003) as Helena, proving the amazing actress has some pretty good staying power. Not to mention a whole slew of TV mini-series, many of which involve the Greek myths: Odissea (1968), or Odyssey; Moses the Lawgiver (1974); A Mala de Cartão (1988), or The Card Case; Ocean(1989); and another version of The Odyssey (1997). Fortunately, some of Irene’s roles have left us with satisfactory skinematic sightings, starting with an ocean romp as Anna in Ecce Homo (1968), or Behold the Man, where we’re treated to almost four full minutes of frolicking nudity that include great underwater derriere shots, and an extended admiration of her buoyant twins with pointy nipples (gotta love cold water). The raven-haired honey also portrayed Helen, the most beautiful woman in Greece, in the classic film TheTrojan Women (1971). While she’s fully bare-skinned in the movie, there are (annoying) conveniently placed wood slats blocking the view. Not to worry, though, we do get glimpses of her perfect breasts between the panels when she kneels down, then again when she stands up; it’s all very quick, but worth not blinking for those few precious seconds—that’s what Visine is for!
